Nestled in the heart of the Budgam district in Jammu & Kashmir, Doodhpathri, meaning Valley of Milk, is an enchanting meadow that feels untouched by time. The name itself is drawn from a local legend that the water flowing through this valley appears milky white when it rushes over the smooth stones, sparkling under the sunlight. Surrounded by dense pine and deodar forests, lush green pastures, and snow-capped peaks in the distance, Doodhpathri offers a peaceful escape from the hustle of everyday life.
Located about 42 km from Srinagar, this alpine gem sits at an altitude of around 2,730 meters (8,957 feet) above sea level, making it a perfect retreat in both summer and spring. Unlike more commercialized destinations like Gulmarg or Pahalgam, Doodhpathri remains relatively less crowded, preserving its raw and untouched charm. This makes it an ideal location for travelers seeking solitude, nature walks, or simply a quiet picnic by the Shaliganga River.
While Doodhpathri is mostly a summer destination because of heavy snowfall in winter, it has something magical to offer year-round — from wildflower-covered meadows in May to a snowy wonderland in December. Whether you are a photographer, a trekker, a nature enthusiast, or simply a traveler looking to unwind, Doodhpathri promises a serene and rejuvenating experience.
The name Doodhpathri comes from a local legend about Sheikh Noor-ud-din Noorani, a revered saint of Kashmir. It is said that he once prayed for water in this area and struck the ground with his stick, causing a stream of milk to gush forth. Though the liquid was water, it appeared milky white due to the high mineral content, hence the name Valley of Milk.
Historically, the meadow served as a summer grazing pasture for nomadic Gujjar and Bakarwal tribes, who brought their herds to feed on the lush grass.
