A Weekend in South Lake Tahoe
South Lake Tahoe is hands down one of my favorite places in the world. I spent many summers frolicking around the mountains and lake there without a care in the world. It continues to be a location that I crave, so whenever I am in California, you bet I spend a weekend in South Lake Tahoe.
My boyfriend and I drove up to South Lake Tahoe early one Saturday morning with plans of adventuring outdoors the entire weekend. Unfortunately, it snowed the whole time we were there. Which meant we basically stayed indoors and planned a night out at the casinos. But don’t worry, I’m not complaining at all! A weekend indoors in Lake Tahoe is better than a weekend outdoors anywhere else.
We stayed at The Beach Retreat & Lodge in South Lake Tahoe and let me tell you, this place was the absolute cutest. Imagine a hotel right on the lake with cute chalk signs everywhere. Throw in a pool, a hot tub, two bars, a tiki bar on the beach, fire pits, and free s’mores every night. I was sold with the free sugar. There was a wedding at this hotel that day, so you can imagine how beautiful this place is.
Another awesome amenity that the hotel provided was a free shuttle to and from the casinos. So, instead of spending the hundreds of dollars you won that night on an Uber, you can ride back for free! Sadly, the casinos didn’t treat us that well. After we unloaded our things into the room, we headed to one of the bars for a drink and some cards.
As I mentioned, the hotel has a selections of bars. The one we chose was called The Boathouse on the Pier. It was literally a bar on top of the pier, so you glanced out side and were right on top of the lake. It was absolutely beautiful! They provide live music on the weekends and absolutely delicious cocktails. As we walked in, we were greeted by a husky-voiced gentlemen who served us drinks. He was so friendly and made us feel right at home during our weekend in South Lake Tahoe.
Luke and I made ourselves comfortable and started our Phase Ten game (my new obsession). The live music was incredible, the views were stunning, the drinks were delicious, and I couldn’t help but feel right at home. Of course, I had never lived in Lake Tahoe for more than a summer, let alone in that bar. But that’s the kind of environment it was: very homey.
Our bartender kept returning to make sure we were doing well. His voice was so unique and I couldn’t help wanting to talk to him more. He seemed like a really cool man. I looked up at Luke and said, “I bet he has a good story to tell.” And you bet I asked him for one! Read my next blog post and you can find out what Jonny Mac had to say!
As for Lake Tahoe, I highly recommend The Beach Retreat & Lodge. It would be an absolute dream there in the summer time. But, if you get unlucky like we did, it was still epic sitting in the hot tub under the snow and finishing off our night with some free s’mores!
Here is a list of my favorite activities for your weekend in South Lake Tahoe:
Sugar Pine Point State Park
Sugar Pine Point is one of my all time favorite beaches to visit in South Lake Tahoe! The water here is absolutely beautiful and as clear as can be. Do not miss out on the chance to run off the Sugar Pine Point dock into the refreshing lake. You can even camp here for the weekend!
Stateline and Heavenly Village
Casinos, endless shops, delicious restaurants, and even mini golf! Whether you’re in the mood for a relaxing afternoon meal or a night out at the casino, you won’t be disappointed visiting The Village while in South Lake Tahoe. There is something for everyone at the Stateline. Don’t miss out on the change to be in two states at one time! You can even ride the Heavenly Gondola for the most amazing views of the Lake.
Fallen Leaf Lake
Fallen Leaf Lake is a secluded area behind South Lake Tahoe. The hikes around the small lake make you feel like you are on a different planet. Pack a picnic and hike around the ruins of the abandoned bed and breakfast. It’s the perfect location for a romantic afternoon in South Lake Tahoe!
Sunset at The Beach Retreat & Lodge
I mentioned before that we stayed at The Beach Retreat & Lodge. But what I didn’t mention was how beautiful the sunset is at this location! I have visited this beach many times before just to witness the beauty of the sun setting over the mountains of Lake Tahoe while sitting on the dock. If you want to grab a drink, check out the Tiki Bar and the Boathouse on the Pier! Say hello to Jonny Mac from me!
If you’re looking for an easy hike to some incredible views, Eagle Falls is the place to go! The views of Emerald Bay are absolutely jaw dropping once you reach the waterfall. If you continue past the waterfall up to Eagle Lake, you will be welcomed with views of Desolation Wilderness and one of the most beautiful lakes I have ever witnessed. The hike itself is not too intense. I have seen many children make it up to Eagle Lake!
If you’re looking for a more intense hike, check out Maggie’s Peaks! I was definitely under prepared for this. Make sure you have a hearty breakfast before attempting this climb. Pack sunscreen and plenty of water! The most difficult part for me was the switchback portion at the very end. But the views were absolutely worth it! We spent the afternoon on top of the world and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Make sure you fill out your permit before your hike as you will be entering into Desolation Wilderness!

After all the adventuring, you deserve one of the best ice creams in town. Check out Camp Richardson’s Ice Cream Parlor and take a stroll down to the beach. You will not be disappointed, especially if you get three scoops!
